CHARACTER NAME: Galo Thymos
CHARACTER AGE: Early 20s? 21 at most, nothing confirmed but he’s a freshman firefighter so…
SERIES: Promare
CHRONOLOGY: Mid-final showdown with Kray Foresight.
CLASS: GODDAMN HERO
HOUSING: Anywhere is fine, but if the apping Lio Fotia gets in same or adjacent housing preferred.
BACKGROUND:
In a prequel entitled “Galo-Hen”, we are introduced to Galo as the newest member of Burning Rescue. He is shown to be a true rookie—rambling about interests and passions his compatriots have no interest in and find him to be a bit immature for. The prequel really gets off the ground when the station’s sirens go off and the team sets out, with Galo earning a spot only due to him arguing that it’s an experience he needs. During the efforts to subdue the blaze, Lucia discovers a woman is still trapped inside—Galo takes the initiative to save her by covering himself in flame-retardant gel and running off to save her.
When Galo finally reaches the woman (Thyma), he proceeds to carry her out as they are chased by Burnish flames. In their exit, Galo’s jacket burns off. His efforts earn him respect from the rest of Burning Rescue’s team. However, the victory is short-lived as Thyma wakes and becomes Burnish herself, resulting in several severe burns to Galo’s left arm and Thyma being taken away by members of Mad Burnish before anything can be done.
Flashing forward to the events of the feature film, Burning Rescue is sent out to deal with a new Burnish incident. During the efforts to quell the fire and rescue survivors, Lucia registers strong Burnish signals on the roof. Using his matoi to clear the smoke, Mad Burnish—a terrorist group—reveals themselves. Galo challenges them to a fight, first taking on Gueira and Meis with rather unsuccessful results. However, upon activating his matoi tech, he handly defeats the two of them and calls down the “big boss” to get off his high horse. This results in another fight, much more intense and trying than the first. Eventually, utilizing the skills and timing of the rest of Burning Rescue, “boss” Lio is subdued and subjected to a hero’s intro via Galo’s idiocy.
All seems to go well, after a minor confrontation with Freeze Force over who should have credit for Mad Burnish’s capture. Galo is awarded for his efforts and is seen celebrating with most of Burning Rescue. However, Freeze Force makes another appearance, demanding the surrender of another Burnish—this one an innocent employee of the pizzeria the gang is at. Galo tries to stop the leader of Freeze Force, but it results in nothing. Frustrated by his failure to save someone he sees as innocent (Burnish, but not a terrorist), Galo storms off on his motorcycle. This ride takes him out to a distance frozen lake in the mountains, a place where he goes to cool off. While here, he notices a Burnish flare in the reflection of the lake and goes to check it out—like a dumbass.
This moment is interrupted by another Burnish alerting Lio to a suffering and dying Thyma. Galo wants to help her, but Lio refuses in order to attempt a Burnish form of CPR, sharing the flame via mouth-to-mouth to try and keep the flame going. It’s unsuccessful and Lio reveals that her death is because of experiments by Kray Foresight and his company—the same man Galo idolizes for saving him when he was young. It is after this painful truth that Lio makes his exit with the rest of the Burnish, hoping to take them somewhere safe. Galo is left tied up in the cave to be discovered by Aina later.
Having learned this uncomfortable truth about his hero, Galo goes to confront Kray. Insistent on an answer, Kray reveals that the experiments do exist, but that it is so Kray can create a stable form of teleportation to transport select humans from what he says is a doomed Earth—one that will be flooded with magma because of the Burnish activity. Galo refuses to accept these horrible experiments to be the only way as it leads to the torture and death of innocent people. Seeing that Galo cannot be swayed to his way of thinking, Kray has Galo arrested and fabricates the lie that Galo assaulted him.
Following his arrest, Galo spends time in solitary confinement to await his fate. While the time is not directly stated, it is estimated that he has been in confinement for close to a week. During this time, other Burnish have been rounded up and Lio attacked. This causes Lio to go into a blind rampage on Promepolis. In his rage, Lio’s destruction inadvertently frees Galo. Seeing the destruction to the city, Galo meets up with Burning Rescue to try and stop Lio. Using his matoi teach and Aina’s helicopter, he is able to force Lio into a container to make an attempt at calming him down—he mostly succeeds by reminding him of Mad Burnish’s pledge to not kill anyone without reason. It’s at this point Aina unceremonious dumps them out on the frozen lake to “cool off”. Lio’s flames end up melting the ice and revealing a hidden lab within the lake.
Following the flare leads Galo to a cave where several escaped Burnish are hiding. His freeze gun in hand, Galo is frozen by the image of broken people, most notably a young boy. Before he can do more than stare, he is knocked out and tied up (presumably) by Lio. When he awakes, Lio chastises him for interrupting their meal. Galo makes some smart comments about the Burnish’s need to eat and set things ablaze—which results in a scathing speech from Lio about how Burnish are human, able to hear the flames cries but human all the same.
This lab is revealed to be that of Kray’s mentor, Professor Deus. An AI of the professor within the lab proceeds to reveal the truth of the Burnish through EXPOSITION. The Burnish are attuned to an alien race known as the Promare, a living form of energy. Kray’s plan to use the Burnish to transport Earth survivors would only ramp up the destruction of Earth. Wanting to stop Kray, Deus offers up his creation: the Deus X Machina for Galo and Lio to pilot and use in the fight against Kray.
Taking the professor’s words to heart, the pair head out to confront Kray, who already has the transportation plan underway. The pair, after using the abilities of Lio to transform the Deus X Machina into the much cooler Lio de Galon, start by attacking the command tower of Foresight Foundation’s transport. Their efforts frustrate Kray and draw him out into the fight in his own Mech (dubbed Krazor X by Galo). The fight eventually ends in a standstill, with both mechs frozen in place. Lio is taunted into leaving their mech by Kray, but is caught instead has Kray reveals himself to be a Burnish, unaffected by Lio’s flames. He reveals himself to not be the hero Galo thinks him to be, instead, he is the one responsible for the very fire he saved Galo from. He finishes this explanation by launching his own Burnish flame at Galo in an attempt to kill him and takes Lio away to replace the transport’s core.
Galo wakes on the ground, unharmed by Kray’s flame because he was protected by Lio’s own. Knowing what Kray is planning, and knowing he has to save Lio, Galo asks for help from the rest of Burning Rescue that has made it to the scene. They agree, and Galo prepares to launch into the core of the transport—it is at this point that Galo will enter Mask.
PERSONALITY:
Galo is, by the admission of Promare’s director, an idiot protagonist. He isn’t the type to really think before he acts or speaks, running purely on instinct 100% of the time. This is especially evident on his first ride into the field where he does little more than cover himself with flame-retardant gel before rushing into a three-alarm fire to save one person. He wants to be a hero—he’s going to be a goddamn hero. He is brash and speaks his mind regardless of circumstances.
Galo is, because of this idiot protagonist characteristic, likely to disregard orders that prevent him from taking direct action in emergencies—or in general. This means he is sometimes at odds with superiors and those that seem to think they have a level of authority without earning his respect. This is directly seen in each confrontation with Freeze Force’s captain, Vulcan. He outright challenges the authority Vulcan tries to invoke, even when the captain threatens jail and a trial for his insubordination as a “civilian”. Galo does not take well to bullies.
He may seem to be all brawn, no brain, but underneath that seemingly endless lack of thought and foresight lies a deeply compassionate heart. At his core, Galo doesn’t want to see others hurt and is quick to see the good in people. He refuses to see all Burnish as evil people, knowing at the core they are still human. He just…wants them to stop setting things on fire. His capacity to see the good in people can sometimes land him in hot water though, as seen with Kray—he refuses to see the bad in him up until he is forced to reconcile with the truth of the non-rescue that led him to idolize the man. Even then, he would go on to save Kray along with everyone else because a hero doesn’t kill unless it is necessary.
At the center of Galo’s character is what he calls his burning firefighter’s soul—a passion to extinguish every fire of wrong in the world. He ultimately wants to protect and save the innocents in the world, and unless you have an established record (coughMadBurnishcough) he won’t outright target a person without cause. This, once again, can easily lead to him being deceived as he wants to believe in the good of people first.
POWER:
▲ Burning Firefighter Soul Galo's passion manifests itself as what he calls his burning firefighter soul. Basically, it's what he stakes his determination and survival on, even going so far as to take Lio Fotia's flames head-on and claiming them not to be hot at all in comparison to said soul. In-Game this would translate into temperature resistance, increased stamina, and enhanced healing abilities--essentially your standard shonen protagonist power. ▲Fotia Flame In the point he's from in canon, Lio had given Galo some of his flames to shield him from an attack from Kray Foresight. Galo still has that flame. In MoM this would translate to a shield that responds to direct fire, and can be used to revitalize Lio Fotia (if also accepted) once when he is on the verge of death--doing so would mean Galo would surrender this power.
〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉 COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: HEEEEEEEEEEEEEY! What gives?! Who do I talk to about this job assignment? YOU CAN'T TAKE A FIRE-FIGHTER OUT OF THE FLAMES! [Apologies to anyone in hearing range. And to anyone that turned on their devices to hear this idiot yelling at an unholy hour of the morning. Really, government agents might want to look into just when they unleash these hellions onto an unsuspecting world. At any rate, Galo doesn't look mad so much as he looks put-out.] I mean my world is literally on fire, and that's kind of important. But what bastard decided that someone with a burning soul set on extinguishing every flame across the world should be anything BUT a fire-fighter? Seriously, who do I talk to about that? Or about getting home--oh man I hope this isn't where Kray was taking everyone. [And now that slightly put-out look is a bit frantic.] Ah hell. Did we FAIL???
